Your home is in need of deep cleaning.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-158dogj evys1bk0\">\u201cWith the house getting so much use, it really does need more attention,\u201d said Sabrina Fierman, the vice president of the cleaning company\u00a0<a class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/nyelves.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New York\u2019s Little Elves<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-158dogj evys1bk0\">We asked her and other cleaning pros for advice on what to do.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"link-5d5c0dcf\" class=\"css-ow6j0y eoo0vm40\">Gather Supplies<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-158dogj evys1bk0\">Most cleaning jobs around the home can be completed with a few key items: a vacuum, a mop, microfiber or cotton terry-cloth rags (or paper towels, but they create more waste) and an all-purpose cleaner.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"css-1fanzo5 StoryBodyCompanionColumn\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-158dogj evys1bk0\">It\u2019s possible to make your own all-purpose cleaner, Ms. Fierman said: \u201cAdd half a cup of white vinegar, one pint of rubbing alcohol, one teaspoon of dish soap and enough water to make a gallon.\u201d Then pour the mixture into an empty spray bottle.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-158dogj evys1bk0\">\u201cThis is a really good cleaning product for the whole house,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s eco-friendly, it\u2019s hypoallergenic, and it\u2019s really effective.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-158dogj evys1bk0\">If you don\u2019t have rubbing alcohol, try mixing equal parts white vinegar and water, and adding a couple of drops of dish soap, she suggested.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-158dogj evys1bk0\">For bathrooms and kitchens, some specialty supplies, like tub-and-tile and toilet-bowl cleaners, will be required. Surfaces like natural stone, stainless steel and wood may also benefit from cleaners created specifically for them.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"><\/aside>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"story-ad-2-wrapper\" class=\"css-1r07izm\">\n<div id=\"story-ad-2-slug\" class=\"css-l9onyx\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"after-story-ad-2\">\u201cThe advantage of using cleaners that are designed for a particular surface is that they won\u2019t damage that surface,\u201d said Hedi Modaressi, the senior director of formulation and fragrance at\u00a0<a class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/methodhome.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Method<\/a>\u00a0Products. \u201cYou don\u2019t get more cracks and crannies on the surface, which, in the end, become more of a good environment for bacterial growth or dirt to build up.\u201d<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"css-1fanzo5 StoryBodyCompanionColumn\"><\/div>\n<div hard-to-reach areas, trying to tackle a whole home in one afternoon could prove impossible. \u201cDeep cleaning involves a lot of detail, a lot of time and a lot of labor,\u201d Ms. Fierman said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-158dogj evys1bk0\">To make the job more manageable \u2014 and for a quick sense of satisfaction \u2014 start by focusing on the room that needs the most attention, whether it\u2019s a bedroom, bathroom or kitchen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-158dogj evys1bk0\">\u201cThat way, you can feel like you\u2019ve accomplished something,\u201d she said, which may inspire you to keep going.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"link-6de8482\" class=\"css-ow6j0y eoo0vm40\">Begin at the Top<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-158dogj evys1bk0\">Dust falls to the floor during cleaning, so it makes sense to start by cleaning the ceiling and then working your way down.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-158dogj evys1bk0\">\u201cLook for cobwebs in the corners,\u201d said Kadi Dulude, the owner of the New York cleaning company\u00a0<a class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/wizardofhomes.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wizard of Homes<\/a>, and inspect ceiling fans and light fixtures. \u201cMost people don\u2019t look up, so these are things that are missed all the time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-158dogj evys1bk0\">Most cobwebs can be vacuumed away, but stubborn ones should be coaxed off the ceiling with an extendable duster or soft broom, Ms. Dulude said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\">\n<div id=\"c-col-editors-picks\" class=\"css-j64t31\">\n<p class=\"css-ohexsw\">Ceiling fans are often covered with a thick layer of dust and require a two-step cleaning process: First, remove all the dust you can with a damp cloth, then use an all-purpose cleaning spray for a final polish. Suspended light fixtures can be treated the same way.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"css-1fanzo5 StoryBodyCompanionColumn\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-158dogj evys1bk0\">Cover furniture below with a bedsheet, Ms. Dulude advised, to catch falling debris.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"link-14aa0c9d\" class=\"css-ow6j0y eoo0vm40\">Clean High-Touch Surfaces<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-158dogj evys1bk0\">During the coronavirus pandemic, most of us have learned to be wary of high-touch surfaces in public. For the glass, finish with a glass cleaner like Windex or white vinegar.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"><\/aside>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"story-ad-4-wrapper\" class=\"css-1r07izm\">\n<div id=\"story-ad-4-slug\" class=\"css-l9onyx\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"story-ad-4\" class=\"ad story-ad-4-wrapper\" data-google-query-id=\"CI_X2I2e-OwCFS0CiAkdWDgEdQ\">\n<div id=\"google_ads_iframe_\/29390238\/nyt\/realestate_7__container__\">\u201cI like to use vinegar because it\u2019s effective, it doesn\u2019t leave streaks and it\u2019s also good for taking away odors,\u201d she said, as the vinegar smell dissipates.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"css-1fanzo5 StoryBodyCompanionColumn\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-158dogj evys1bk0\">Clean windows the same way. Many people don\u2019t realize it, Ms. Dulude said, but most double-hung windows have sashes with clips at the top that allow them to be tilted in, so the inside and outside can be cleaned.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-158dogj evys1bk0\">Finally, clean windowsills with a cloth and soap and water. And \u201cif it\u2019s really bad,\u201d she said, \u201cuse a scrubbing brush.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"link-51d42da5\" class=\"css-ow6j0y eoo0vm40\">Give Bathrooms Extra Attention<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-158dogj evys1bk0\">Most people clean bathtubs, showers and toilets as part of their routine housekeeping, but some parts of the bathroom are frequently missed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-158dogj evys1bk0\">Drains, for instance, are typically ignored until a clog or odor requires attention. To avoid that, clean them before they become problematic.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-158dogj evys1bk0\">\u201cWhen you open up the drain, there is usually some nasty stuff inside, because hair does get through, and it gets dirty, moldy and stinky,\u201d Ms. Dulude said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-158dogj evys1bk0\">To take care of it, put on gloves and pull out the gunk, perhaps using the end of a wire clothes hanger. \u201cThen pour a few spoons of baking soda and vinegar in, and let it bubble up,\u201d she said. \u201cLater, drain it with hot water.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"><\/aside>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"story-ad-5-wrapper\" class=\"css-1r07izm\">\n<div id=\"story-ad-5-slug\" class=\"css-l9onyx\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"story-ad-5\" class=\"ad story-ad-5-wrapper\" data-google-query-id=\"CPjKxI6e-OwCFbLgtQodAe8BNw\">\n<div id=\"google_ads_iframe_\/29390238\/nyt\/realestate_8__container__\">The areas where tiled walls meet bathtubs and shower enclosures can be breeding grounds for mold and mildew. Toss any expired food from the pantry while you\u2019re at it, before putting things back.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"css-1fanzo5 StoryBodyCompanionColumn\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-158dogj evys1bk0\">A thorough cleaning of the inside of the refrigerator should also be on your to-do list, Ms. Fierman said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-158dogj evys1bk0\">Finally, wash out the trash bin and wipe down the area under the sink, as those areas are often the source of odors.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"link-60ec2507\" class=\"css-ow6j0y eoo0vm40\">Finish With the Floors<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-158dogj evys1bk0\">Once higher surfaces are sparkling, clean the floors.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-158dogj evys1bk0\">Hard floors like wood, ceramic and stone should be vacuumed and then mopped, Ms. Fierman said. And if you have hardwood floors, the mop \u201cshould not be anything more than damp,\u201d she said, because too much water can damage the wood.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-158dogj evys1bk0\">For hardwood, Ms. Fierman uses Bona floor cleaner or a mix of equal parts white vinegar and water. She recommended tying a cloth around the end of the mop, rather than using the mop head itself, so it can be replaced with fresh rags as cleaning progresses: \u201cWe don\u2019t like to use the same surface over and over, because we don\u2019t want to just push the dirt around.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-158dogj evys1bk0\">When vacuuming carpets, furniture should be moved in order to clean the entire surface. \u201cYou have to actually move the furniture and change the layout of the room,\u201d Ms. Dulude said, \u201cto make sure you get under everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-158dogj evys1bk0\">That includes rugs, which should be rolled up so you can clean beneath them. If possible, beat the rugs outdoors to remove embedded dirt.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"><\/aside>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"story-ad-7-wrapper\" class=\"css-1r07izm\">\n<div id=\"story-ad-7-slug\" class=\"css-l9onyx\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"after-story-ad-7\">If your carpets are looking a bit grungy, and perhaps even smelly, Jon Gholian, the founder of the New York cleaning company\u00a0<a class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/bookcleany.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cleany<\/a>, suggested sprinkling baking soda over the surface before vacuuming. \u201cLet it sit for half an hour,\u201d he said. \u201cThen go over it with your vacuum. That will take out a lot of the buildup and leave your carpet smelling great.\u201d<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"css-1fanzo5 StoryBodyCompanionColumn\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-158dogj evys1bk0\">Once you\u2019re finished (and exhausted), try to maintain the new feeling of cleanliness with more frequent, lighter cleanings.
